Homelessness to be measured in annual study in Chemung/Schuyler Counties

Homelessness is an issue that Elmira has been trying to handle for many years, with 2024 being the most active year yet. Recent laws passed in the city prohibit camping on city grounds, with citations given to violators, and camps removed. To better understand homelessness in the county, Catholic Charities will conduct its annual Point-in-Time study in a five-county region on Thursday, Jan 23.

Catholic Charities recently purchased the former HN Electric two-story building adjacent to Daystar Life Center on Gulf to Lake Highway in Crystal River as an outreach center. Daystar will also use the building as an empowerment center. Daystar is a ministry of St. Benedict Catholic Church in Crystal River, and the church is part of the Diocese of St. Petersburg.
