In 2012, U.S. Army veteran and devout Catholic Johnnie Walker was serving as commander of the Disabled American Veterans chapter in Cape May County when he learned of a veteran who was about to become homeless.
“I went to social media and shared our story, and received 18 replies from people who wanted to help. We put him in a motel for a week, then found him housing,” Walker said. “I thought to myself, ‘If we could do this unorganized, just imagine what we could do to help veterans if we were organized.’”
