Nonprofits step up as heat wave hits the Twin Cities

With temperatures soaring above 90 degrees in the Twin Cities, local nonprofits are ramping up efforts to protect the area’s most vulnerable residents from the dangerous heat.

At Catholic Charities Dorothy Day Place in Saint Paul, Mary Emby and her daughter, Ginger Emby-Bovee, are among those seeking shelter from the sweltering conditions. “We’re going to play bingo—one of our favorite activities,” Mary said, adding that the shelter offers more than just a cool place to stay. “It’s socialization. It’s a place just to come to, to get out of the hot sun, and something to be very active in.”
