Des Moines fifth graders paint mural inspired by fresh food, helping others

Willard Elementary School student Valeria Cruz-Rodriguez dips her brush in a can of sky blue paint and begins adding it to the bricks above a freshly painted vegetable stand.

Perched on a stepladder outside the Catholic Charities food pantry at 1815 Hubbell Ave., the 10-year-old outlines the sky with careful precision as she helps bring her and her fifth grade classmates' shared vision to life.
