January is Poverty Awareness Month, as well as the month when counties throughout the U.S. conduct point-in-time (PIT) counts, a count of unsheltered or homeless individuals. This year, PIT counts will take place Jan. 22-23.

The Diocese of Arlington encompasses four of the wealthiest counties in the country, according to U.S. News & World Report. Yet, last year, the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments reported 9,774 individuals experiencing homelessness, a 12 percent increase from 2023.
